 2nd Anniversary of

St Mary's Hospital Stroke Support Group

Life After Stroke - Support Group

St Mary's Hospital

Today the 6th of June 2017, we held another successful stroke support group meeting and celebrated the second year anniversary of the Stroke Support Group here in St. Mary’s Hospital.

There were 38 people in attendance, including many stroke survivors and their families, health care professionals and other hospital staff.

The group was established in June 2015 and meetings are held in the Lecture Hall in St Mary's Hospital every second month (see dates for meetings in 2017).

The meetings provide ongoing support to stroke survivors and their families, giving them the opportunity to meet with their peers.

The stroke survivors enjoy meeting others in similar situations themselves and also welcome the chance to chat with members of the multi-disciplinary team as well as professionals from outside agencies and stroke support services.

On this occasion, we were delighted and honoured to have Ms. Dorothy Keally O’Brien from ISKUS Health, who has a background of Nursing and Infection Control as a guest speaker. She spoke to the group about the importance of oral care post stroke.

Mr. Laurence Clonan, a stroke survivor and prior in-patient of Isolda Unit, also spoke and shared his own personal experiences of suffering a stroke and talked about recovery with the group. It was a very emotional and inspirational story for the audience, particularly for those still in in-patient recovery.

This was undoubtedly a very special 2nd year anniversary meeting and it ended with everyone enjoying a slice of celebratory cake.
