Healthy Snacks to Bring From Home

Please be mindful that after a stroke many people will have special dietary needs. A number of patients may have swallowing difficulty so some foods may be a choking risk. Always check with a member of staff first before offering food to a patient.

For many patients healthy eating is part of the recovery process and it may help to reduce the risk for further stroke.

These are some of the healthy snack ideas:

  • Fresh fruits: apples, bananas, pears, grapes and snack pots

  • Fruit tinned in natural juice (not tinned in syrup)

  • Sugar free jelly (available in snack pots) or sugar free jellies, mints

  • Diet minerals or sugar free squashes

  • Low calorie hot chocolate (Cadbury’s Highlights or Options Hot Chocolate)

  • Sugar free mints

  • Small bag unsalted popcorn

  • Plain rice cakes

Avoid sugary sweets, cakes, chocolate, and crisps.

Due to Health and Safety issues foods that need to be stored in the refrigerator may not be brought in to patients.

Ideas include:

  • Magazines

  • Books

  • Games (board games, crosswords, cards, video games)

  • Fancy toiletries

  • Make-up, manicure kits

  • Posters

  • CDs/DVDs

  • Photos
